Team Truck

Question and advice about Team Truck Drivers?

Hello! I'm trying to think of a career that I'd like to do in the future and I'm not sure, but a little while ago, my mom came in talking about Team Truck Drivers since she has always wanted to be a truck driver. And I love road trips.

How old do you have to be to be a truck driver? I'm only 17, turning 18 in August, but I won't be the driver, but I'd still like to know.

Also, is it fun and cool? I'd just be worried about leaving my dad, and my pets, but it seems like something really cool. Any advice?

You must be a minimum 18 years old, and have held a valid driver's license for 2 years to get your CDL.

You cannot leave your state/province until you are 21.

Most companies will not hire anyone under 23 due to insurance costs.

You have to pass a physical, eye test, hearing test, drug/alcohol screening, and a police clearance.

With team driving, the truck never stops... with the exception of picking up, or delivering, or fueling. There is no time to sit around, or sightsee.

It can be somewhat fun or cool at first, but that feeling doesn't last long. It is a hard job. Certainly not the lifestyle for everyone. And it is a very under-appreciated job.

You will not be able to ride along with your mom as a permanent passenger. If your mom runs team, there will be no room for you.

As far as leaving your dad behind, when you are out on the road, you can be gone for weeks at a time... even longer than a month. If your mom goes the trucker 'route', go on a few trips with her if she is a 'single' driver. At your age, i can almost guarantee you will get bored fast.
