Can Gas
Portable room heater - Can it cause high electricity bill?
I use gas heater for the whole house but I have two dogs using a portable heater each because they are in two rooms outside the house. Can this be causing our electric bills to go up. My PG&E bill is $495 in one month.
All standard plug-in type electric space heaters have a maximum rating of 1,500 watts and will produce no more than 5120 BTU of power. That includes the Eden Pure types at $200+ and the Wal-Mart specials at $29.95.
So, assume you have a standard unit at 1,500 watts. This will come to 1.5KW/hour of consumption.
Here in PECO territory (southeastern PA), that will cost approximately $0.21/hour to run. If you run such a unit for 10 hours per day, for 30 days per month that will come to $63 dollars per month for that single unit. If, as it appears from your description, you are running two of them 24/7, that would come to approximately $302 per month.
