Is it illegal to tow away a car abandoned on your property to the scrap metal yard ?

We bought an investment property for rental in a low income neighborhood. A vehicle was abandoned in the driveway for a few days, had all kinds of drug paraphanelia condoms and other junk in it, we called the cops 3 times, they never came once, we then called the station and someone told us that it was our property, we could do what we wanted with it, so we towed it to the junk yard. My hubby is now sitting in jail on 2 felony charges until court in the morning. they think he stole it and got money for it. Now, we own 3 homes, several bank accts and 3 little girls why would we steal a car, call 911 3 times and take it to the junk yard and give name and address if we stole this car.......makes no sense.
This is in New York and my husband own a tow truck and took it to a scrap metal yard, a junk yard and they gave hime $100 for it. The two felonies were, 1. stealing a car 2. getting sompensation for it

You're not going to like reading this, but legally speaking, your husband stole a car.

In the situation you outlined, you have the right to remove the car from your property, Each community has a specific procedure for disposing of abandon vehicles, and you must follow them to the letter to avoid the situation you now find your self in. You should have called an independent towing company to remove the vehicle and take it to their storage yard. It became a crime when your husband SOLD property that did not belong to him. That is where he made his mistake. When you take something that does not belong to you and sell it, that's stealing. Sorry! Good luck in court.
