How long do wines last if not open?
My mom recently died. Stashed away in her apt. were numerous bottles of wine going back 15 years. Is there any way to know if they're any good or good enough to give away? We don't care for wine except a bit in cooking so there's no way we'd ever use it up. Any ideas on what to do with it? There are both reds and whites. How do I know if they are a special or rare vintage?
It depends on the wine. Some grape varieties are best drunk young and fruity whilst other are best if saved & allowed to mature before drinking. Then there are the investment wines, a vineyard will make a limited number of special wines which are intended to be bought as either an investment or saved for a very special occasion. A rare wine tends to be an exceptional bottle from a bad year thus increasing its value. You can research your Mum's stash quite easily on the web. First google the vineyard, then the grape and year. If that fails to provide an answer take your hoard along to a reputable wine dealer/reseller and ask for advise.
