Penzoil AT Fluid.. Good or bad?
I have been wanting to change my tranny fluid and I ended up buying some Penzoil brand fluid on a whim b/c I came across it at Wally World and it was the only stuff they had. Not sure if they're are different kinds but it was just regular ATF in a yellow jug and cost 9.90 a gal. Is it decent stuff or should I return it and get something different?
Pennzoil, Castrol, Havoline... any brand name is almost identical. You just need to make sure it's the right type of fluid for your transmission. But you may find it's more hassle than having a shop do it. Simply draining the transmission and filling with new fluid only gets 1/3 to 1/2 of the fluid in the transmission because you're only gettign to the fluid that has settled to the pan. Fluid still resides within the transmission, torque converter and transmission cooler (if you have one). To do it without equipment, you'll have to drain the old fluid, fill with new, start the car, shift from reverse, to drive, back to reverse, to drive over and over again for 1 minute. Drain the fluid, fill with new again. Repeat reverse, drive, reverse, drive.. You drain and fill and shift through gears again and again until the fluid looks clean. You'll usually go through about 12 quarts before it's acceptable. A lube shop will use the same procedure for cars that don't have a transmission cooler. For cars that do have a trasmission cooler, they'll connect the cooler lines to a machine that will do the fluid exchange automatically. This service will cost from $60 to $120, depending on the car. Make sure you check the fluid again about 5 miles after the service to make sure it's clean.
