Do you remember the Madonna and Pepsi-Cola Controversy dealing with the "Like a Prayer" video?

I am working on a paper about the controversy that occured in the year 1989 between Madonna and Pepsi-Cola. Pepsi-Cola signed a deal with Madonna in which Madonna would make a few commercials representing the softdrink. The first commercial was created to highlight Madonna's newest single "Like a Prayer" and the commercial was very sweet. However, the day after the commercial aired, the music video for "Like a Prayer" aired and caused a storm of controversy for Madonna and Pepsi-Cola. The video showed pictures of stigmata, burning crosses, and a black man and white woman fulfilling their sexual desires in a church. I would like some feedback from yahoo users about their views on the video and the controversy. If you could, state how old you are and if you watched the video when it debuted in 1989. I just want to know if viewpoints on this video have changed drastically since 1989, and I would love to hear some opinions.

I watched the debut on MTV when MTV was all about music videos. I still think it was one of Madonna's best videos. The underlying message was a woman who saw a horrific crime and afraid for her own life she sought sanctuary in a church. After receiving signs from god she had the courage to do what was right and go to the police to free an innocent man.
Any situation that doesn't adhere to everyone's beliefs will be criticized by someone. and since you can't please everyone somebody will complain. Take the video with a grain of salt. it might not adhere with your beliefs but it has a positive message.
Also to keep in mind is that the video used a lot of writers tricks to convey meaning. It wasn't a white woman and a black man fulfilling sexual desires in a church. It portrayed a servant of god showing this woman that god loves her and will keep her safe. Whether this was the best way to show this is up to debate but hey it was the 80's after all.
